Screenless Typing: Auditory Keyboard

 

An ongoing research to understand and test the "screenless typing" interaction and browsing to explore what's beyond screen-centric interaction. The target users for this project are Blind Visually Impaired (BVI) users. The project is partially supported through Google Faculty Research Award.

Context

I recently joined this project. In past the team members have worked on exploring a screenless navigation using MYO band and Android mobile application. The limitations of this approach was the system to detect gestures was not accurate enough restricting the user to interact fluently. My role is to explore a new screenless navigation that can be used to further make this interaction more fluid and convenient. 

 

  • Explore finger based screenless navigation 

  • Conceptualize various designs

  • Build a functioning prototype of the final design

  • Test and gather feedback from BVI users to further improve the prototype

Based on my knowledge gained from Human-Centered Interaction design at IUPUI, I am going to apply my research and design skills to conceptualize designs. And using my hardware prototyping skills I am going to build the functioning prototype of the design finalized. This is an opportunity for me to use my background and polish my hardware prototyping skills along which my school learnings.

In past I have build a functioning prototype that converted text-to-speech for BVI users using gestures. This works as an extension to contribute in the realm of screenless navigation and accessibility.
